Brief introduction of the tool

VoiceThread is a communication tool where different images and videos can be “threaded” together, and users involved in the thread can add audio, video, and text comments using different mediums. Users are also able to draw on images and zoom around as they see fit. VoiceThread allows collaborative work and editing between users, so they can present topics and ideas to eachother through their projects.

  • Advantages of the tool

Voicethread is a very easy to use tool that hits all the E’s (efficiency, effectiveness, and enhancement) without a doubt.
Efficiency: For the teacher, this is a quick was for them to create a lesson that the students can look at or come back to later. It also allows students to quickly collaborate with each other on what their thoughts are about a particular topic.
Effectiveness: The students will better be able to comprehend what subject matter is being discussed by being able to talk about it themselves. They will easily be able to transfer their ideas with multiple options to do so like through telephone, microphone, text, webcam, or file upload.
Enhancement: Voicethread enhances a students learning because it gets through to them through multiple senses and variations of information transfer. They receive other students’ thoughts and what they teacher is trying to say through many different ways including text or voice.

  • Disadvantages (limitations) of the tool
It would take time to teach children how to use this tool, and the many different ways you can comment, upload voice threads and pictures.

Application of the tool in your subject area

VoiceThread documents could be used in an elementary classroom instead of traditional powerpoint projects. Depending on the technological skill of the classroom, students could use voice thread to create image or video based presentations on a topic, and they could provide insightful comments or questions in whatever medium they prefer, on the side. This would help narrate and provide an overall purpose for the threaded images.
Also, teachers could create presentations for their class with comments that ask students questions. This would be a great way to begin a topic, and could serve as a type of content exploration in the form of a tutorial. Students could then add comments and direction to the images of the original presentation to answer the questions asked by the teacher.
